Break out the old tool belt. Monster.com says online advertising for installation, maintenance and repair jobs showed the strongest growth of any occupation in the last year, jumping 27%.

The dismal June jobs report notwithstanding, Monster’s employment index was up 4% in June over June 2010. It was the 17th consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

The sectors that showed some of the best growth in online postings were wholesale and retail trade. Postings also increased for information jobs in media and telecommunications, according to Monster’s count.

As many unemployed will attest, just because companies are posting jobs doesn’t mean they are actually hiring, but Monster officials say it’s a good sign.

“It is encouraging to see that the Monster Employment Index U.S. has reached its highest level since October 2008 and has shown continued growth in the current economic cycle,” said Jesse Harriott, senior vice president and chief knowledge officer at Monster Worldwide. “Expansion in recruitment activity for the commerce sectors, like retail and wholesale trade in particular, is a positive indication of continued momentum in economic activity.”

Overall, Monster says 15 of 23 occupational categories grew in June. Installation, maintenance and repair openings led over the last year.

Those in business protective service saw the biggest decline in openings, down 20%.

In terms of industries, mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction postings jumped 25% over the last 12 months, but it was no time to be going into government work. Public administration positions fell 21%.

The Monster Employment Index U.S. is a broad and comprehensive monthly analysis of U.S. online job demand conducted by Monster Worldwide, Inc. It is based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from a large, representative selection of corporate career sites and job boards, including Monster.
