Photography

We get photo tips from a local wedding expert.

Photography
William Vassar Figge entered the world of picture-taking as a combat photographer in WWII.

Even after his death in the ’70s, his wife and children continue to share his passion at Figge Photography in Newport Beach, where William had always dreamed of running his studio.

Today, his widow, Melba; son, Greg; and daughter, Leslie, own and operate the studio. While the business originally grew through wedding photography, it has since expanded to also include family, children and commercial portraits.

We asked Leslie Figge, art director at the studio, for some insight to help you plan your big day.

What are the big wedding trends these days?
A lot of our weddings now are destination weddings. Just this [last] year alone, we went to Mexico and Hawaii.

What kinds of challenges do you encounter in wedding photography?
You never know what’s going to happen at a wedding, there are so many parties involved.  Sometimes you get to a wedding and the bride is just a nervous wreck. Many times we’re the ones who calm these people down.

What can a bride and groom do to help you make their photos as fabulous as possible?
Number one, we always include an engagement sitting in our packages. We want to get to know them and we want them to get to know us. I think it’s very helpful for the bride and groom to make a list and tell us what they expect. I think it’s important to have your make-up done – even if you’re fabulous at putting on your own makeup. It’s probably a little more than you wear, but it’s really worth it because your photos are better.

As wedding photographers, how do you prepare yourselves to capture that wedding magic?
We are constantly upgrading our equipment. It’s like you’re an actor going on stage, you prepare. Get there early. Do your homework. Make sure you know everybody’s names.

wedding photo from figge photographyBlack and white or color?
We do both because we love both. It is up to the couple. But we shoot a lot of both. Personally, I love black and white, I think it’s timeless.

For those wedding guests with cameras, what are some photo-taking tips for the amateur?
I think the more pictures, the merrier. Be aware of the professional photographer, so [you] don’t get in the way. Try to put your subject in good lighting.

Any tips on choosing a wedding photographer?
You have to meet them and make sure you’re a good fit personality-wise, and that you love their photography.
