THE OWNERS For 20 years, Elaine Turney bought for a living. But one day, she took her experience as a major chain buyer in the garment, furniture and lighting industries, and turned to selling. The 6,000 square-foot Here Today … Gone Tomorrow furniture and accessory warehouse is what’s come of it. The store originally opened in a 1,000-square-foot facility in Costa Mesa, about six years ago, with quite a bit of help from industry contacts. She runs the store with her husband, Duane.
THE AMBIENCE Buddy, the Turneys’ six-year-old white lhasa apso/schnauzer, may greet you excitedly when you enter the large furniture-packed facility. As you wind your way through the myriad of benches, cabinets, mirrors, dining room tables, desks, artwork, one-of-a-kind pieces, and much more, you may get a little overwhelmed. Elaine recommends going through the store a few times so that you don’t miss anything you’d like. She’ll help you out along the way. Despite its size, the store has a cozy, casual, friendly feel.
THE PRODUCT You’ll find an eclectic mishmash of old and new furniture types, styles and colors including contemporary, Asian antique, cottage, and Tuscan. A $30 bamboo vase can be found sitting next to a $400 contemporary Buddha sculpture. And if you keep walking, you may happen upon a seven-foot Chinese medicine cabinet, covered with small drawers, or antique Mongolian 400-pound doors, which can be used in a residential front gate. The store imports mainly from China and Indonesia, and sells to stores, model homes, designers and the public. The Turneys have made it a goal to keep their overhead low, thus keeping prices low while maintaining quality. “You don’t have to spend a ton of money to get nice things,” Elaine says.
THE BOTTOM LINE Great for people looking for unique and interesting furniture and home style pieces.
