T
here’s a reason that the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has the words “American” and “theater” in its name.

The celebrated dance ensemble grew from a legendary March 1958 performance and since then, the troupe has performed for more than 20 million people in 71 countries, earning a reputation as one of the most acclaimed ambassadors of American culture.

Anyone who has experienced the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater live knows how theatrical the presentation is, particularly when performing pieces such as Revelations, Ailey’s groundbreaking 1960 classic that is both a testament to Ailey’s genius and a tribute to African-American heritage.

Revelations is just one of many pieces the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
will perform during its week-long stop at the Orange County Performing Artscenter.

“The company continues to set the standard for great dance while keeping alive the incredible work of Alvin Ailey himself,” says Judy Morr, OCPAC’s executive vice-president. “They are more than just an American cultural treasure; they contribute to our nation’s character, and we are proud to welcome them back.”

Works to be performed in repertory include Firebird (a reinterpretation of the fairytale set to Stravinsky’s score), The Golden Section (choreographed by Twyla Tharp to music by David Byrne), Flowers (inspired by the life of Janis Joplin and not seen in three decades), and Revelations, which incorporates African-American religious music including spirituals, song-sermons and gospel.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will perform March 11-16. For tickets and a complete schedule, call (714) 556-2787, or visit www.ocpac.org
