THE OWNER In Hindi, the word “lala” is a nickname for a business person, but for Kerry Cassill, it has turned out to be much more: It is the title of her passion and her livelihood, an oceanfront Laguna Beach boutique. It doesn’t hurt that “lala” is “easy to remember,” says Cassill, who started her Indian textile-inspired line more than 15 years ago.

Her goal was to create a cozy California beach shop where customers could find quality Indian fabrics and unique clothes, and along the way she has forged close relationships with friends from India who have helped create the beautiful products found in her store today.

THE AMBIENCE A large table with candles and flowers and an amazing
array of colorful, patterned fabrics are the dramatic centerpieces of lala. On the right side of the shop, large bags dangle from a fireplace; jeans hang on the wall like pieces of art. Making your way to the back of the boutique, there is a patio area, where the dark blue waves of the ocean become instantly visible. The atmosphere, according to Cassill, is “modern, comfortable and livable,” but the boutique also transports clients to another place and time when surrounded by her exotic fabrics.

THE PRODUCT lala carries a wide range of hand-crafted fabrics made and imported directly from India. Made in environmentally friendly factories, the fabrics are colored with vegetable dyes to avoid using chemicals. These textiles can be used for decoration in the home as everything from wall hangings to bed coverings, or as upholstery to spruce up an old chair or couch, adding flavor to any home. The fabrics are also made into one-of-a-kind garments, which lala offers as dresses, shirts and even pants. lala’s antique jewelry selection and large beach and travel bags complete the look.

THE BOTTOM LINE An exotic journey in your own back yard.
