The Mansion Debate

Is this new Orange County mansion “the jewel of Irvine” or an eyesore in a quaint 1960s neighborhood?

Mansions are nothing new to the upper-crust lifestyle of Orange County. New ones being built along the manse-ridden coast these days are met with the drone of a mere “ho-hum” rather than the excited “ho-ho!” that might escape from the mouths of a more impressionable population.

It’s true that these mega-homes connote a lavish standard of living, but in some neighborhoods, like University Park in Irvine, the latest (make that only) mansion on the block – a 3,850-square-foot, $1.47-million home dubbed “the jewel of Irvine” – is being met with anything but awe.

Dissidents argue that the home’s large size and contemporary style don’t mesh with the quaint 1960s neighborhood.

Supporters say it might inspire nearby residents to spruce up their own properties. Whatever the opinion, “the jewel of Irvine” is one mega-home that can’t be labeled as more of the same – an accusation the latest Laguna Beach mansion would be hard-pressed to avoid.
