'Dropping the Body'

THE ARTIST: Figurative painter Natalia Fabia has been painting the female form in environments for years. Infused with vivid candy-colored palettes and a dazzling spectrum of light, her work is a combination of fantasy narratives and actual moments captured from her life. Fabia’s work depicts sultry scenes filled with human figures, lush environments and an unapologetic sexiness. A 2006 graduate of the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, Fabia began showing her work in group exhibitions around Los Angeles in the early 2000s, establishing herself as a contender in the figurative painting arena. The Artist’s inspiration: My meditation teacher refers to death as “dropping the body,” which I love. It means you are shedding your shell and your spirit goes on. This is one of the most significant pieces for me. It represents death as the last cycle in the cycle of life, which is what my recent body of work, “Rainbeau Samsara,” is about. The subject of the painting is transitioning from the physical body; her human shell drops as the spirit rises, represented by cosmic jellyfish. The jellyfish were not planned but came about after underpainting in that blue violet tone. I like their amoebic, ethereal, transparent quality. One of my favorite parts of this piece is that the jellyfish in the bottom-left corner was painted by my daughter. She had no reference for it, and it was so innocent. The drapery on the body is not flying upward, the way it would be while falling. It’s almost floating. One of the most significant aspects for me was having the face serene and expressionless. Death shouldn’t be feared. It is one of the only things we all know we will go through. The connection to the divine isn’t a far away place, but rather a oneness that is always with us, a portal that can be accessed at any time.
