There are now approximately 20,000 hotel rooms in Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort area serving the Disney resort, with its upgraded and now highly popular California Adventure; and the Anaheim Convention Center, the largest convention center on the West Coast.

But that is apparently not enough. A plethora of real estate developers are currently planning to add a total of 3,770 more hotel rooms – an increase of nearly 20% – in a proposed 14 new hotels. Of course, proposed is always that – some could never materialize while others will come onto the scene where the Disney resort itself attracted 23 million guests during last year.

Some hotels are closer to realization than others. For example, a new 123-room Marriott Springhill Suites opens in December on Ball Road. Developer DKN Hotels points to pent-up demand in the area. Opening price for rooms will average an attractive $124 per night.

Land preparation is underway for a 252-room Hyatt House and for another Marriott Springhill Suites, this one with 172 rooms. The city of Anaheim has recently approved a 221-room Courtyard by Marriott; and a 96-room Holiday Inn Express, a 274-room Marriott Residence Inn and a 215-room Homewood Suites are now before the Planning Commission.

Then there are the larger hotels. The 600-room Great Wolf Lodge is expected to break ground at any time; the city has approved plans for two GardenWalk hotels totaling 846 rooms; and three as yet unnamed hotels totaling 760 rooms are proposed for groundbreaking in 2014.

It would appear that demand for hotel rooms for the next several years in the vicinity of the Disneyland Resort and Anaheim Convention Center will be well met.

A vacant 3.1-acre site on MacArthur Boulevard near the Costa Mesa Freeway (55) in Santa Ana, once envisioned as a site for a high-rise condominium, has been sold out of receivership for $17.3 million to a Beverly Hills-based developer. The Legado Companies, which purchased the site, is expected to develop three five-story buildings with a total of 271 apartment units.

The site has had a series of owners and development plans over the past eight years and Legado is expected to retain the most recent name for the proposed project, The Met at South Coast. This will be Legado’s first project in Orange County.
