Several thousand happy onlookers watched and cheered their approval as the color guard, school bands, bag pipers, tap dancers, old-fashioned swing dancers, floats, and baton twirlers paraded down Marine Avenue at The 20th Annual Balboa Island Parade on Sunday, June 2, 2013.

The theme of the parade was Balboa Island – Yesterday and Today. As the parade started, Landon Wasem of Jetpack America soared over kayakers in the bay with a 10-foot American flag waving proudly behind him.

Well-behaved canines, many in costumes, were everywhere. Dachshunds, Labradors, golden retrievers, and Pomeranians strutted and pranced with their attendants to the delight of young and old.

Dignitaries from all levels of government, from Newport Beach Mayor Keith Curry to  County Supervisor John Moorlach and State Senator Alan Mansoor, rode in vintage automobiles. Grand Marshal Dean Torrence, of Jan and Dean surf rocking fame, performed along with other bands.

Almost 120 entrants made this the largest parade yet. Special floats included the Real Housewives of Little Balboa Island and the Nomads rock band. Jake in the Box was special for the kids.

Balboa Island was a spectacular place to be.
