Balboa Village Gets Parking Boost

Revitalization of Balboa Village, the neighborhood adjacent to the historic Balboa Pavilion on the Newport Beach peninsula, is a top priority for Newport Beach.

The business area serving Balboa Village -- which has a mixture of tourist and residential uses -- has been identified as in desperate need of upgrading.

One of the major requirements for the retail firms and restaurants serving the area is parking, and the city has just taken a major step to alleviate the parking space shortage.

The city council has agreed to spend $3.5 million to purchase the historic Balboa Village Market, closed since 2006, and to tear it down to provide a city-owned parking lot.

A problem: what to do about the murals painted on the side of the market? The answer: The proposed parking lot will provide art in some fashion.
