The John Wayne Cancer Center organized a lifeguard paddle down from Gaviota State Beach in Santa Barbara County to Imperial Beach in San Diego County.Newport Beach Lifeguards led by Skeeter Leeper carried a commerative buoy from River Jetty in Huntington Beach to Big Corona State Beach in Corona del Mar on Friday. Seven lifeguards and friends completed the almost three hour paddle and swam ashore to cheers and sirens from fellow guards and on lookers. The event is a fund raiser for John Wayne Cancer Center. Equally important, it brought attention to the ongoing efforts of lifeguards to educate the public and junior lifeguards and their parents about the dangers of sun exposure and its relationship to the rise of skin cancer.
