Their mascot, Eve, is wearing an orange bandana in her hair and standing against a backdrop of the same bright orange that brands the Bottle Logic brewery. She is bold, adventurous, and has great taste in beer. Her dark green cargo pants paired with a laser gun in her hand and goggles on her head dub her as the perfect blend between an Indiana Jones heroin and a Star Wars Tatooine native. The slogan reads, “When it came to beer, Eve didn’t take chances…” and she is one of three characters the founders of Bottle Logic have created to complement their brewery’s unique persona.
“There has even been talk of a comic book detailing her adventures,” says Brandon Buckner, one of three founders, and brand manager for Bottle Logic who loves the story they have created with Eve and the retro-futuristic sci-fi theme the brewery is known for. Buckner and his partners, Wes Parker and Steve Napolitano have known each other for over 10 years, but when they were brewing together in Parker’s garage, they never imagined Bottle Logic would become what it is today.
“Wes’s garage looked like a mad scientist’s laboratory for about 3 years, until we decided to investigate what it would take to open an actual brewery,” they said. When it came time to create a brand they decided to stick to their guns. Laser guns, that is. Customers love the brand’s sci-fi adventure theme, the generator in the store was shipped in from Philadelphia, the comic books on the shelves, and so much more. But above everything else, the customers love the beers.
They are creative in both their names and recipes, like Eve’s “She Shot First,” which is a year round pale ale brewed with “generous amounts of malted wheats, and Pacific North West hops.” Or the “Tattered Prince,” a spiced saison brewed with orange peel, coriander and ginger. The most popular one among them all is the “Double Actuator,” which is a double IPA that has “the aroma of papaya, grapefruit, and blueberries,” highly hopped and still very drinkable.
The “Double Actuator” was a bold project that Parker started in his garage and still recommends to any new comer who steps into their brewery today. “It was one of my first homebrews that validated my decision to open a brewery. The original recipe went through more than a dozen changes before I was happy with the results,” says Parker. Like a lot of Bottle Logic’s beers, this double IPA really tests the boundaries with its recipe, but the finished product always holds up for both seasoned craft beer drinkers, and newcomers alike.
All three of Bottle Logic’s founders are Orange County natives, making the city of Anaheim an easy choice for their brewery’s location. Like most other breweries, Bottle Logic is nestled in an industrial pocket of Anaheim, only a few miles away from Disneyland. Its manufacturing neighbors and industrialized backyard might be the only similarity that it shares with other breweries. Before Buckner, Parker, and Napolitano got to the site, their soon-to-be brewery was an auto repair shop, much like the garage they had been experimenting in before.
The Bottle Logic experience is hard to emulate anywhere else, mainly because of the amount of time and energy the founders have put into the process of making their unique beers. “We come up with an initial concept, do a test brew, work on a name and label, and finally do a limited release. If that works out well, we move forward with full production. The most recent beer in the pipeline is our “Toasted in Tahiti,” a coconut coffee pale ale,” says Bottle Logic president, Napolitano. As a coffee lover myself, though some might say addict, “Toasted in Tahiti,” was by far my favorite beer at Bottle Logic, and maybe even of all time.
My roommates and I waited until 6 p.m. when it became available since it is a limited beer, and could not have been happier with the result. You can enjoy the sweetness of the coconut in the foam of the beer, while washing it down with a balanced bite from the hop. The Bottle Logic guys have proved that coffee pairs perfectly with coconut in this limited seasonal beer. All I can hope for is that it makes it to list of “Constants,” which are offered year round in the tasting room. But in the meantime there are lots of other beers you should give a try.
“For a new craft beer drinker, we all suggest they be open to trying many beers. There are many beer styles out there and one has to be willing to try something new to find the style you enjoy. For our beers specifically, ‘Joule Thief’ or ‘Hanamachi’ are both fairly light and easy to drink.” But if you want to be daring, and venture away from the popular beers, or try something you’ve never heard of before, just ask the great people at Bottle Logic to help with your decision. The charming men and women dressed in black and orange T-shirts behind the bar love to guide customers through their tasting room experience.
“Education is our main focus in the tasting room and we look forward to hosting events where our customers can learn more about the enjoyment and varied flavors that craft beer can offer,” says Parker.
