The 2014 BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in Indian Wells began March 3, 2014 with a full slate of the world’s top tennis players. The first weekend had a few surprises on both sides of the singles draw. On the men’s side, top seeds Rafa Nadal (1), Novak Djokovic (2), Stanislas Wawrinka (3), Andy Murray (5), and Roger Federer (7) all advanced. Tomas Berdych (4) was sent home early. On the women’s side, Li Na (1), Agnieszka Radwanska (2), Maria Sharapova (4), and other top seeds Sloane Stephens and Caroline Wozniacki also won. Former world number one and third seed Victoria Azarenka was eliminated by unseeded Lauren Davis. The tournament has the largest tennis stadium court (16,000) in the world and has added a second stadium court with over 8,000 seats. Sell-out crowds, including a large gathering of Orange County tennis fans were treated to outstanding tennis and beautiful weather for the largest tournament in the world excluding the four opens. The winners each receive one million dollars for their efforts.
