The University of California, Irvine will become the hub of all stem cell research in Southern California when a new, three-story stem cell research facility opens on the UCI campus in 2010. Construction will begin this September.

The $61 million research facility has received an input of $27.2 million from the State of California and private donations and “campus debt” dollars will fund the remainder.

Research activities are being funded by the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The university has already received $46.8 million from that fund established by the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act.
