| CLEANUP PREP Go prepared to the cleanup with some of these bring-your-own essentials to reduce the amount of waste at your beach: Bring a reusable bag to collect trash in. If you don’t have a reusable bag, try bringing a paper bag, which decomposes easier than plastic bags. Bring a pair of washable gloves from home, instead of using the disposable plastic gloves provided at the cleanup. Bring a filled, reusable water bottle to the cleanup rather than a disposable water bottle. Use public transportation, bike or carpool to the cleanup to be extra green. |
The ocean gives to us Southern Californians in so many ways – and yet, we don’t always remember to give back. On September 25, 2010, we’ll have plenty of opportunities to say thank you to our Orange County coast with the help of California’s Coastweeks, an event celebrating the sea.
According to the California Coastal Commission, last year’s event attracted over 80,600 volunteers that collected more than 1,300,000 pounds of trash from beaches, lakes and waterways – making it one of the largest volunteer events of the year.
