Comic-Con Turns 41

Glorious madness defines the 41st San Diego Comic-Con International 2010 event. Over 100,000 people from around the globe gathered for this world-famous mecca of geekdom. Some come for the celebrity-filled panels, the shopping and show exclusives, others for the endless swag, networking opportunities and for the many sights to behold.

Science fiction- and horror-related happenings reigned supreme as usual. Big Hollywood companies shelled out their big announcements while promoting upcoming hits including: Tron, The Avengers, MegaMind, Green Lantern, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and more. Rabid fans arrived in droves to interact with their favorite TV show stars. Popular TV shows with epic lines were "True Blood," "Futurama," "Dexter," "Venture Brothers," and anything Joss Whedon-related. Gaming companies also pulled out their big guns as new coming hits, including "Red Faction," "Marvel vs. Capcom 3" and "Star Wars Unleashed II" brought the fan-drool.

Even though such popular cult followings have attracted new show attendees over the years, Comic-Con is still about the comic books. Those appreciative of the word-bubbled sequential art styles surely were not disappointed as many comic books were prominently featured. Artist alley, the small press tables and lesser-known comic book companies received plenty of potential fan energy as their aisles filled.

And of course, the true power behind Comic-Con – the fans – were dressed in elaborate costumes (many Captain Americas, Deadpools, Batmans, Jedis, and Wonder Womans were sighted) while others sported familiar T-shirts and caps. While such nerd pride runs rampant at other comic-sci-fi-gaming-anime conventions, there is something special about the SDCC. Perhaps it’s the strength in numbers... The sheer amount of crowded chaos is enough to tire any outsider, but the fan-ergy pushes on, wishing it would all never end.
