Transition of the former Irvine Industrial Complex into the Irvine Business Complex – including a heavy residential concentration – could take another step forward following a recent decision by Conexant, the semiconductor manufacturing company.

Conexant plans to convert 25 acres it owns along Jamboree Road near Birch Street on the Irvine/Newport Beach border to residential and commercial use.

Called Uptown Newport Village, the development would demolish the firm’s two industrial buildings and create 1,244 residential units, condominiums and apartments. Plans for Uptown Newport Village include retail shops, parks and what Conexant calls “a pedestrian-friendly environment.” If approved, 15% of the residential units will have to be “affordable.”

While landowner Conexant is applying for the zoning, the re-zoned land would be sold to a real estate developer for actual development.
