FORMER PROSECUTOR MIKE BREWER is now a defense attorney in private practice who focuses on representing people on DUI and selective criminal defense cases. He is dedicated to helping normal people who find themselves in the midst of the criminal justice system. "The usual way that your average person is going to get in trouble with the criminal justice system is with a DUI," says Brewer, who is a member of the National College for DUI Defense and the California DUI Lawyers Association. "And they are generally normally law-abiding people that simply make a mistake or are falsely accused by circumstances beyond their control."
Brewer formerly served as a prosecutor in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties as well as a legal instructor for the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff. Brewer is also a past President of the Newport Bar Association and the Orange County Bar Association, Solo & Small Firm Section. "I started off with the Army JAG corps, which led me to the U.S. Attorney's Office and ultimately to the prosecutor's office in Los Angeles," he says. "As a prosecutor, I successfully handled cases from murders and sex crimes to everything in-between."
In addition to DUI and selective criminal defense cases, Brewer also handles expungements, certificates of rehabilitation and pardons. He also represents people who were arrested but later found to be innocent. In these cases, Brewer files petitions for declarations of factual innocence in order to remove the wrongful arrests or convictions from their records.Freeing an innocent person is the most rewarding thing that an attorney can ever do," Brewer says.
Brewer utilizes his 25 years of experience, along with his connections as both a former prosecutor and his current work as a defense attorney, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of cases. In order to obtain justice for victims, Brewer even makes use of tools and resources that the government does not possess. "We use the best experts in the business and the best investigators in order to get the right results," he says.
Brewer has also worked and trained with the FBI, United States Secret Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and United States Department of Justice. He has even consulted on popular television series such as Law & Order and Court TV.
He is acclaimed by clients and peers alike, getting most cases by referral from other attorneys. As the author of 'Tactically Developing Your Case' in Thomson West's Leading Lawyers series Strategies for Defending DUI Cases in California, Brewer often gives lectures or makes media appearances about cases in the criminal justice system. And besides seasoned expertise, Brewer also guarantees his clients one other thing: "Clients can expect honesty," he says. "I am going to give them an honest assessment of their case. They are not going to get promises that we can't keep. We will, however, leave no stone unturned in their defense and in receiving the best possible result."
