Dog Beaches, North to South
|
The summer heat is here. And if you're hot, your pet is practically overheating. A great way to enjoy summer with your pooch is by visiting some of Orange County's dog-friendly beaches. Here is a list of dog-friendly beaches and surrounding areas to keep you and your pup cool.
Huntington Beach
With its very own dog beach, Huntington is often referred to as Orange County’s “dog-friendliest beach.” Dogs can swim, surf and play in the sand all year round with no time restrictions. The stretch of sand from 21st Street to Seapoint in North Huntington Beach is Orange County's only dog-permitted-off-leash beach and parking is only $1.50 an hour by meter.
Newport Beach
Before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m., you and your pet can explore Newport’s beaches. There are other dog-friendly areas in Newport that can be visited at any time of the day. Balboa Island and Fashion Island have a variety of dog-friendly stores, restaurants and areas including The Barkery and Muttropolis Fashion Island.
Corona del Mar
From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. you and your dog can come enjoy Corona del Mar’s Main Beach area. Make stops at Inspiration Point and Little Corona so your pooch can make new furry friends along the way. Also, Bristol Farms in the Corona del Mar Plaza caters to you and your dog by selling salads and doggie treats, giving you a quick break and refueling after a nice long walk.
Laguna Beach
During the summer months, there are strict restrictions on when dogs can enter the beach areas in Laguna. From June 15 to September 10, leashed dogs are only allowed before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. This may be too early (or late) for you and your dog's walking routine, but taking the time to explore Laguna’s beautiful coves, beaches and sunsets with your pooch is well worth it.
Dana Point
Even though Dana Point beaches don’t allow dogs on the beach, dogs are still able to enjoy the surroundings at a variety of nearby spots. With an array of dog-friendly restaurants, shopping and beautiful waterfront views, the Dana Point Marina is a perfect place to take your dog on a nice summer day. Also, the Doheny State Beach campgrounds lets dogs enjoy the grassy park areas for a fee of $20.
San Clemente (San Onofre State Beach)
Leashed dogs are always welcome on trails one and six. Take the Basilone Road exit south of San Clemente. There is a $10 park entrance fee.
