The ninth annual Halloween Surf Contest hosted by the legendary tavern Blackie’s By The Sea in Newport Beach was celebrated on Saturday, October 26. Over a hundred surfers in costume paddled out to ride the mini-waves on a foggy, cool morning. Hammy Gallagher, a yellow lab, surfed with his attendant, Shawn, and pleased the hundreds of enthusiastic, cheering onlookers. Thirty-three awards, including best costume, best ride and best crash, were presented. The event takes place north of the Newport Pier on the Saturday prior to Halloween.
