Huntington Beach is ready to move forward with continued renewal of its downtown following recent certification of the city’s general plan by the California Coastal Commission. The plan covers 336 acres of land along Pacific Coast Highway from Golden West Street to Beach Boulevard extending six blocks inland.

Expected to guide development over the next 20 years, the general plan calls for “visitor-friendly” and “pedestrian-friendly” development at ground level – including restaurants and shops – and more parking. The guidelines also call for new streetscapes and for encouragement of bicycle and public transportation.

Coastline Community College’s new Newport Beach campus – a $48 million project on a 3.4-acre ocean-view site – is well under construction and moving toward a fall 2012 completion.

Located at 1515 Monrovia St., the building will provide classroom space for students beginning with the spring 2013 semester.

The new campus, which will replace a current smaller campus in adjacent Costa Mesa, will join Coastline Community College campuses in Garden Grove and Westminster. This is a far cry from the 80 small sites operated by Fountain Valley-headquartered Coastline in 1976, when it was called “the college without walls.”

Designed by the architectural firm of LPA, Inc., the striking new building features tall, angled glass walls overlooking the Pacific Ocean, meant to “recall sails in a wind,” according to the architects.
