Understatement has never been Lamborghini’s strong suit. Last year, the Italian exotic automaker feted its first 50 years with a pair of wildly over-the-top offerings: the $4 million Veneno and its $4.5 million open-air sibling, the Veneno Roadster. With ultra-low production volumes of three and nine, respectively, your odds of ever seeing – let alone owning – a Veneno coupe or roadster are roughly… zero. Now, on the heels of such devastating news, comes a ray of hope. And its name is Huracán.
At this month’s Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini officials debuted the long-awaited successor to its volume seller, the Gallardo. The so-called “baby Lambo” has enjoyed a decade-long run, with the last of just over 14,000 examples of the angular exotic rolling off the line of the company’s Sant’Agata Bolognese factory late last year. Officially designated the Huracán LP610-4, Lamborghini’s newest bambino looks to be a bruiser.
The Huracán’s mid-mounted, naturally aspirated V10 sends 610 ponies of power to all four wheels (hence 610-4 appellation) via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Other performance-oriented highlights, of which there are plenty, include the choice of three dynamic driving modes: Strada (“street”), Sport and Corsa (“race”). Each offers a unique combination of engine, transmission and stability control settings. Visually, the Huracán borrows extensively from the larger Aventador. The baby Lambo inherits its bigger sibling’s signature wedge shape, single silhouette line from nose to tail, and various angular scoops and vents. Inside, the centerpiece of the leather-laden, driver-focused cockpit is a 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel.
Lamborghini has yet to announce official U.S. pricing for the Huracán, but it’s pretty safe to expect something in the neighborhood of $250,000. As for availability, the odds of snagging one look are particularly good here in Orange County. Local dealer Lamborghini Newport Beach claims to have been allocated the most Huracán models of any North American dealership.
