Any recounting of the history of the homebuilding industry in Orange County is incomplete if it doesn’t include Larry Webb or the homes built by the companies for which he’s worked. Webb, who held CEO and president positions at firms such as John Laing Homes, Kaufman & Broad and Greystone Homes, could very well be an institution in his industry. And he has reinvented himself.

In 2008, he and three of his homebuilder colleagues launched The New Home Company in Aliso Viejo and Roseville, California. Late last year, the company announced an ambitious new project, Lambert Ranch, a gated master-planned community of 169 single-family luxury residences on a 50-acre parcel of land in Irvine.

So how does one of OC’s best-known homebuilding executives live? Webb, pictured with his wife, Janet Hadley, at their Newport Coast residence, provides an exclusive glimpse:

Aesthetic sensibility of your home
California ocean comfortable. Very light, terrific inside/outside relationship

Favorite room
It depends on the time of the day. In the morning, the living room; in the afternoon, the family room; at dusk, the backyard and fireplace area

Favorite chair
Swivel chair in the family room

Objects on your nightstand
Alarm clock, Freedom by Jonathan Franzen and iPad

The best place to think/imagine at home
Internal courtyard with comfortable chairs and a fireplace

The latest thing you bought for your house
A new painting, Baron’s Aunt, by Alice Neel

The most important lesson that you’ve brought from your homebuilding experience into your own home
A sense of scale. Our home has a series of intimate spaces that are great for conversations.

Small intimate gatherings or big parties at your house
Big parties. The indoor-outdoor relationship is dynamic.

Wine or cocktails
Wine, for sure, preferably an Oregon Pinot Noir

If your house had a signature soundtrack, the song you would play is
Anything by Van Morrison or Zac Brown Band. However, when our daughters are home, we’d play whatever is on their iPod.

The one thing you can’t live without in your house
My wife. She makes our home come alive.

The one thing a house should never be without
Love makes a house a home. (If there is no love, you need a lot of big screen TVs.)
