There are brow bars and blowout salons. So why not a lash spa? Barbara Rattigan’s thought exactly, which is why she opened LashSpot Eyelash Extension Spa in Costa Mesa in February. And not completely a surprise to her, business is strong.

“I knew it was going to take off,” says Rattigan, who also owns Shavasana Eyelash Extensions and Lotus Salon and Spa in Costa Mesa. “I had no idea it was going to take off the way it has.”

With six licensed estheticians and a full menu of lash services, including extensions (available in synthetic silk or mink), lash perm (for a more permanent curl), lash tint, and Swarovski crystal application, customers are sure to leave feeling as glamorous as they please.

But while clients can certainly play up the drama for special occasions, Rattigan does like to take a more natural approach to extensions. Lash technicians are trained to work with each person’s lashes to create just the right look.

Initial extension application appointments last 1½ hours and include  a thorough eyelash cleansing followed by the application of individual synthetic lashes to the client’s individual natural lashes. On average, according to Rattigan, it takes about 90 extensions per eye to complete a typical service. Touch-ups are recommended two to three weeks later (these last about an hour) and three to four times a year, clients should start fresh with a clean new set of extensions, Rattigan says. To remove the extensions, clients can use baby oil or come back in for the lash removal service. Rattigan says your natural lashes will not be damaged by extensions as long as they are applied by a trained professional – untrained technicians can damage lashes if they apply an extension to two natural lashes.

Besides extensions, LashSpot also offers brow shaping, facial and bikini waxing, and is set to launch a new semi-permanent mascara this summer.
