Sheer gloss or scarlet red? Metallic gold or soft coral? A hydrating lip balm or a rejuvenating formula?
We live in a great country – one with limitless options, especially when it comes to our lips. But with endless lip possibilities at our disposal, things can get a little dicey. And no one wants to be the chick at the party wearing the wrong shade of pink lipstick.
“There are two major looks [for summer]: one of subtle, soft hues of nude, pale lips and soft pinks; to bold, bright colors,” says Orange County-Los Angeles beauty expert, Dehx, who’s been a makeup artist for 15 years. “Glosses are definitely in, but it’s a more subtle, light approach to shine, a more healthy glow rather than super glossy gloss... And there’s a little bit of frosted and metallics out there too.”
Twenty-two-year makeup artist Carol Cisneros of Anaheim describes this season’s lip look as very ’60s, soft and creamy. “Neutrals and pastels, but also brights,” she says. “Corals, tangerines, with soft golden glosses over them; the pinks are the Twiggy [famed ’60s model] pinks, very creamy and neutral looking, but then again there is the bright pink, not quite hot pink, [with] a little more purple in it. Orchid or lavender with a little more blue. Soft rose petal pinks… Kind of reminds me of a beautiful field of wild flowers and/or daisies and poppies.”
Still overwhelmed? To help you out, I compiled my favorite lip products following an exhaustive (seriously) review of some popular and up-and-coming cosmetic brands. Here’s what stood out from the bunch.
