If you have pre-teen and teenage girls in your house, then you probably know the name Lisi Harrison – or you should. The smart, pretty and funny Toronto transplant and MTV alum-turned-smart, pretty and funny Laguna Beach writer is author of The Clique Series, a hit collection of young adult novels with titles such as Bratfest at Tiffany’s and These Boots are Made for Stalking (available in March 2010). Her novels’ protagonists may sometimes be born with an Asprey silver spoon in their mouth, but Harrison herself is as laid back and down-to-earth as writers come. Here, she talks about her style at home:

Aesthetic sensibility of your home  ::  We have a 1930s cottage with major house attitude. Thanks to several facelifts over the years (so OC!), the layout is more typical of something built in the last decade but the details are old school.

Favorite room  ::  The bedroom. It has an expansive 180-degree view of our neighbors’ trees. It could have an expansive 180-degree view of the ocean should said neighbors’ trees have an unfortunate encounter with a chainsaw while they were on vacation. Also it’s above the rest of the house, so I feel safe when I’m sleeping. If someone broke in, I’d have the higher ground advantage. Hopefully that would be enough to scare the intruder, because I’d have no clue what to do after presenting myself.

The one thing you can’t live without in your house  ::  The orange bathtub. Not only is it the only pop of color in our black, white and gray home, but it’s where we blast music and bathe the kids every night. It’s always at the center of the party.

Favorite chair  ::  The one at the nail salon. In my house, couch is king. We have a white, deep dish L-couch in the TV room. The minute my butt touches the cushions I hear that Fred Flintstone whistle blow in my head. Work is done! Pass the remote.

The best place to think/imagine at home  ::  The bed. It faces 180 degrees of trees. I lay under my duvet and imagine several different ways to trim them without getting caught or falling to my death. I also like the “zen deck” off the TV room. It overlooks the backyard. We have two couches and a grill out there. It’s the perfect place for late night chats and a bottle (or two) of wine.

Your perfect writing scenario at home  ::  Did you say at home? Never gonna happen. Home is where reality is. I escape every day to an office at the end of my street. When I’m done pretending, I go home.

The latest thing you bought for your house  ::  An amazing black-and-white painting from the Surf Gallery in Laguna Beach by an artist named Julie Goldstein. It’s a woman in a bikini driving a dirt bike with her kids on the back. It’s over our bed.

Dinner with friends at home  ::  Grilling or takeout. Casual, fun and a lot of empties when we’re done.

Wine or cocktails  ::  My husband is a Virginia boy, so it’s Jim Beam and Coke for him. I’m more of a wine, margarita, vodka, mojito kind of girl. Like I said, the more the merrier.

If there’s something you could change about your house, it would be  ::  Decorated. We have been so busy with work we haven’t been able to fully furnish it. Also there would be art on the walls. And maybe some color. But that’s just aesthetics. As far as the actual home, I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s a happy place.

If your house had a signature soundtrack, you would play  ::  Easy. The soundtrack to Club Dread. We play it every time we have people over. It’s a mix of old school reggae, dance hall, ska, and well, it all starts to fade into the background once the guests arrive.
