Sometimes I just want to look like a supermodel – smoky eyes, glossy lips, the works. Granted I could lose 20 pounds and I tend to trip a lot – but if the makeup is on right, then who cares? The problem is, when it comes to the more dramatic looks, like the smoky eyes, you have to sort of know what you’re doing or risk looking like an angry raccoon wearing a very nice lip gloss. Trust me.

So after many failed attempts at the smoky-eyed, runway model look, I finally got it right after a visit to MAKE UP FOR EVER Boutique & Studio at Sephora South Coast Plaza. This shop-within-a-shop opened last year packed with its pro-geared line of dramatic yet practical makeup (including, for instance, an HD Unretouched line catering specifically to actors on high-definition television) and a strong educational focus (a variety of free makeup lesson options are available with purchase). Equipped with iPads featuring MAKE UP FOR EVER makeup artist creations and a Smartboard allowing you and an artist to come up with the right look and products for you via a computerized face chart, customers leave the store with all the tips and tricks they need to recreate the makeup applied in the store.

Because the makeup artist plays such a significant role in the MAKE UP FOR EVER concept, we chatted up the South Coast Plaza store’s Head Makeup Artist Jen Evans.

How does MAKE UP FOR EVER stand out from other beauty stores?
MAKE UP FOR EVER boutiques possess a unique backstage industry atmosphere that caters to industry pros and makeup gurus alike. Creator Dany Sanz infuses her background in painting, sculpting, teaching, and experience as a beautician in her approach to makeup, yielding powerful technical and artistic creations.

Why is education so key?
Education is powerful. If you have a vehicle to do something, but are unsure how to get there, the vehicle becomes useless. It’s the same with an art. If you have all these great artistry products lined up like a standing ovation, but have no idea how or what to create, it’s a huge buzz kill. At the MAKE UP FOR EVER “shop in shop” locations, we have a makeup studio where we offer a menu of lessons to choose from, with visual ideas. These lessons are individually customized and incredibly educational.

Describe your specialty lines.
Our HD (High Definition) branch was created to meet the needs of the evolution of film and television to high definition. As technology and the industry evolve, so do we, by way of products and techniques. Our HD products translate well for daily wear with their ability to give invisible coverage – coverage that looks like skin. We have the Aqua Line, which Dany created for the Aquatic Ballet in France. The Aqua Line is quite popular because of its wearable longevity and ability to remain waterproof through all kinds of water, including saltwater. Our Moulin Rouge products were created for the Moulin Rouge performers in Paris, France. This ensemble is led by the Moulin Rouge shade of Rouge Artist lipstick. Moulin Rouge is a neutral red that complements all skin tones and is great for those who are uncertain of what shade of red will look great on them.

What are the biggest mistakes you see women making with their makeup?
I definitely see the misfortune of mismatched foundation more often than not. Also, excessive layering of mascara, which creates clumps for days.

What are some easy tips any woman can incorporate into her beauty routine?
Utilize concealer only where needed. Recognizing what you wish to cover/correct prior to deciding where to place concealer will make it easier to apply, while producing a more impactful difference. Properly highlighting and contouring [a.k.a. shading] goes a long way. This technique hugs the architecture of the face and emphasizes bone structure with balance. Along with this technique, placement of blush is key and keeps the look fresh and current. If you’re not a lipstick wearer, check out a sheer, moisturizing lip gloss like Lab Shine.
