It’s hard to believe that it has been 15 years since Memphis Café opened near the anti-mall in Costa Mesa.
During the Clinton administration, this bar and café honoring soul in both its music and its food, was just another cool place I wasn’t old enough to get into.
When I finally turned 21, I was happy to find Memphis Café was just as cool as I dreamed it was, from its vintage modernist décor to its famous Southern meatloaf stack.
In the time since, a second location has been opened in Santora, Santa Ana’s artist district as well as two sister bars: Detroit Bar, which doubles as a music venue and a gay bar called Tin Lizzie Saloon, both in Costa Mesa. The newest addition to the Memphis family is a Memphis Café in Manhattan Beach.
To celebrate 15 years and its growing success, Memphis Café’s flagship store will be celebrating with its original 1995 menu and original 1995 prices to match, for lunch and dinner on August 25.
DJ Danny Love will also be spinning his ’95 set list of acid jazz and soul, so stop by and party like it’s 1995.
