Southern California has a unique relationship with the sun gods. Many residents live for the feel of the warm rays lathering their skin on clear days at the beach. But there is a slightly cloudier side to our romance with the sun.

According to the Obagi Skin Health Institute’s founder, Dr. Zein Obagi, sun damage is the most commonly seen skin issue at his new Laguna Beach location, which opened in July.

“The Laguna Beach location was chosen as it represents the ideal place to introduce our concept of skin health restoration – focusing on correcting and preventing sun damage and skin cancer, and to bring awareness to the area that there are unique approaches to the concept of healthy sun exposure,” says Obagi.

Services include treatment of a variety of skin problems – including acne, rosacea, pigmentation issues, sun damage and skin sensitivity – with the goal of long-term results rather than temporary fixes.

“We aim to restore skin health at the same time, which makes our results superior and lasting,” says Obagi. “We also rejuvenate skin, correct the aging face and body utilizing our latest innovations in skin health restoration and treatment, skin rejuvenation, peels, and lasers.”

Most importantly, the institute is big on prevention. Skin starts to deteriorate after the age of 10, according to Obagi, and by ages 20-30, skin damage becomes apparent.

“This deterioration of skin can be prevented,” he says. “I strongly believe that we can prevent skin damage, skin cancer, pigmentation problems, acne, scars and skin aging by following a basic skin care program early.”
