If you’re finding yourself stuck in a bit of an exercise rut, it’s time to dig yourself out with something new – in this case, old and new.

An upbeat combination of boxing, Pilates and dance, Piloxing has been growing in popularity. Weighted gloves are used to engage arm muscles and increase cardiovascular endurance. Add energetic dance moves and high-energy music and you have the recipe for a great workout.

Barefoot training is encouraged in Piloxing classes at Boost Fitness in Tustin. According to instructor and owner Julie White, barefoot training improves balance and increases strength and flexibility in the feet.

When I took the class to find out what Piloxing was all about, I learned from White how to use the weighted gloves and about the difference in punching styles compared to traditional boxing.

“Pretend like you’re holding an ice cream cone and you don’t want it to spill,” White advised.

White’s positive and friendly attitude was easily matched by other participants in the class, creating an inviting environment. The class kept energy levels high, using easy-to-follow combinations of dance moves, boxing, Pilates, and ballet. The cardio session was followed by some extra core conditioning using yoga mats. These Pilates moves focused on creating definition in the abs, butt and thighs, which I definitely felt by class’s end. A short stretching session concluded this full-body workout, leaving all participants feeling energized, strong and quite sweaty.

“My favorite part is that I have been teaching for so long and I have had no damage on my joints. You can get a really great workout without putting too much impact on your body,” White said about her class, which she has been teaching three days a week for four years.

White encourages all age groups to try her class, which can be modified to fit specific needs and fitness levels.

“I love the way it makes my clients feel. Women always tell me that they feel so good – tired, but they feel empowered at the same time.”
