Planetary Research Station

For those who lack the $200K to board Richard Branson’s amazing space plane, the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana offers a fantastic alternative to see our planet earth in a new, fascinating way.

Starting December 22, 2009, the Planetary Research Station (PRS) – a giant, six-feet-in-diameter globe of our familiar planet – will amaze eager space junkies. This is not your typical desktop globe, but rather a state-of-the-art animated super-globe featuring our planet. Visitors can witness our changing atmosphere, oceans and land matched to various conditions. With over 500 data sets, this wonder can display snow conditions, rising water levels, the effects of disasters, satellite images, population growth, and so much more.

Why stop there? The PRS can also display other planets, moons and suns with current information on what we know of them. Adding to the PRS is an automated, narrated voice and five instructive panels. This is all just the beginning to the Discovery Science Center’s Space Exploration room, a $5 million upgrade expected to be completed and open in summer 2010.

The PRS is a powerful tool for educating our next generation of young minds. With a better understanding of earth’s workings and current problems, expect inspiration. For tickets and more info on the PRS and the Discovery Science Center’s many educational exhibits for all ages, visit the Web site at discoverycube.org.
