Who says prom is just for kids in high school? As a unique fundraiser, Surfshack Outreach hosted a surf-themed prom charity event.

The Surf Prom hosted a variety of prom-themed activities, including “decorate your date,” taking snaps in a photo booth, voting for king/queen and scavenger hunts. The prom party took place Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Boathouse Collective restaurant in Costa Mesa. Nearly 100 people attended the event to show their support.

The event raised over $3,500 that will help to provide Surfshack Outreach with funding for items like wet suits, surfboards, school uniforms, school materials and food. The organization is dedicated to helping at-risk youth in Cape Town, South Africa directly through the nonprofit’s surf school.

Surfshack Outreach Goodwill Ambassador Elisa Huang says, “Surfshack uses surfing, school tutoring and positive peer guidance as an intervention strategy to steer kids away from a life of gangs and crime.”

Since the program first began in 2002 the organization has helped hundreds of children throughout Cape Town.
