Some run for the thrill of competition while others run just for fun and fitness. Orange County and the surrounding area offer a range of running events for a variety of tastes.

We’ve compiled a list to help you find the right one for you:

May
May 4-6: OC Marathon and Half Marathon
Location: OC Fair & Event Center and near Fashion Island
Course: Kids Run the OC, OC Wahoo’s 5K Run/Walk, half marathon, and full marathon
Kids Run the OC is at the OC Fair & Event Center on May 5; OC Wahoo’s 5K Run/Walk is at the OC Fair & Event Center on May 6; the half marathon starts near Fashion Island on May 6; and the full marathon starts near Fashion Island on May 5. :: ocfair.com

June
June 2: Corona Del Mar Scenic 5K
Location: Corona Del Mar
Course: 5K race, two-mile Fun Walk and one-mile Kids Dolphin Dash
This event, a 25-year tradition of the Corona Del Mar community, finishes along the bluffs of restaurant row, to merchant booths and live entertainment. :: cdmchamber.com

August
August 31-September 2: Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend
Location: Anaheim and Disneyland
Course: Half marathon, Family Fun Run 5K and a kids race
The Disneyland Health and Fitness Expo in the Disneyland Hotel Exhibit Hall is on August 31. On September 1, there’s runDisney Kids’ Races, where children up to the age of eight can participate, with events ranging from a 400-meter run to the 100-meter dash. The Disneyland Family Fun Run 5K, through the Disneyland Resort, takes place September 2. The course features Disney entertainment and characters cheering you on through the race. Also on September 2, the Disneyland Half Marathon takes place with a 13.1-mile journey through Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park, onto the streets of Anaheim, and finishing in the Disneyland Hotel. :: espnwwos.disney.go.com

September 23: Orangeman Triathlon 2012
Location: Doheny State Beach Park, Dana Point
Course: 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run
The Orangeman Triathlon swims off waters of Dana Point, bikes through the cities of Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano and finishes with a flat run along the beach path of Pacific Coast Highway. :: orangemantriathlon.com

September 23: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Orange County
Location: Newport Beach
Course: 5K
Each year, this 5K goes through the streets of Newport, along Fashion Island. The Susan G. Komen 5K is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, with well over one million participants since 2005. :: komen.org

October 6: Into the Wildlands Limestone Eco Challenge
Location: Limestone Canyon Wilderness Park
Course: 12K and 20K
Participants run through Limestone Canyon, located in the historic Irvine Ranch. Runners are encouraged to test the course before the race on Limestone Canyon Wilderness Access Days. :: intothewildoctrailrun.com

October 20: Run For Your Lives
Location: Temecula
Course: Apocalyptic 5K obstacle race
This is literally a run for your life. Before the race, each runner is given a flag belt that represents health. Throughout the run, you will encounter zombies wanting to take your flag and eat your brains. If you lose your health flag, you die (OK, not really) and the zombies win. :: runforyourlives.com

October 21: Beach Derby 10 Miler/10K
Location: Pacific Coast Highway
Course: 10 miler and 10K
With a start and finish at the Huntington Beach Pier, the Beach Derby 10 miler and 10K offer participants the best routes for running along the glorious Pacific Coast Highway. If after completing the races you still want more, try a 5K or 2K beach obstacle. :: beachderby.com

November 4: Dinosaur Dash
Location: Tustin
Course: 5K timed race, 10K timed race, 2K non-timed Fun Run, non-timed 50K Bike Tour
The Dinosaur Dash raises money for the Tustin Public Schools Foundation. Participants run different courses throughout The Market Place in Tustin. :: tpsf.net
