Long-time Orange County residents will remember the Kona Lanes bowling alley, the ice skating rink and the movie theater that were once grouped together on a 21-acre site adjacent to the Mesa Verde shopping center off Adams Avenue near Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa. Despite some local opposition, the entertainment complex was demolished in 2003.

Now, the vacant site, owned by C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, has been re-zoned for a combination of senior housing and commercial use. Plans by Mesa Verde Partners call for 224 units of senior housing in one four-story building and in one two-story building on 7.5 acres of the site.

Although there are no plans yet for commercial development, Costa Mesa envisions the residents of the housing providing additional customers for the existing restaurants and markets in the area and for any future commercial projects.
