A homemade salt scrub can draw out
impurities and exfoliate the skin, says
Kasia Mays.
Crush 1 cup of Dead Sea salt or
Himalayan salt into a fine mixture
Add ¼ to ½ cup of high-grade massage
oil
; grapeseed oil has a neutral fragrance
and usually doesn’t cause irritation
Add 20-30 drops of essential oil, based
on your fragrance preference

A spa visit is supposed to be relaxing, but with the right treatment, it can actually also be good for your health.

Thanks to an array of detoxification treatments readily available at your average spa, benefits of a visit can range from increased energy and weight loss to improved concentration levels and mobility, in addition to glowing skin. “Detox treatments in general have been popular for many years and the fundamental principles of detoxifying are to promote a more balanced body, mind and spirit,” says Kasia Mays, director of spa development at The Spa at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach.

While the general underlying purpose beneath all detox treatments is toxin removal through metabolic stimulation, specific benefits depend on the type of treatment, says Mays. Pelican Hill spa’s Coastal Renewal ($270 for 90 minutes; $340 for 120 minutes), for instance, uses algae and Mediterranean herbs, a scrub, wrap, and massage to detoxify and remineralize the body, improve lymphatic activity and leave skin glowing.

The Journey Spa & Wellness Center in Orange offers an Aqua Chi Foot Detox ($60 for 30 minutes), an ionic foot soak using a saline conductor to circulate ions via electrolysis in order to neutralize free radicals and allow the entire body to detox through the skin. Benefits are said to include help with skin disorders, sleep disorders, stress, joint problems, and a number of other chronic symptoms. Tana Diaz, owner of the detox-focused Journey Spa, also recommends Manual Lymphatic Drainage ($50 for 25 minutes; $80 for 50 minutes), a massage technique designed to decongest, heal and calm through detox induced by stimulating the lymphatic system.

Spa wraps are another way to get a little detox out of your next spa visit, but remember, not all wraps are for detoxification. “The difference is in the pack that is used,” says Erica Goodman, a massage therapist and wrap expert for Spa Gregorie’s. “Seaweed, mud and paraffin are specifically [for] detox because they draw out toxins.”

While the list of common ingredients used for detoxifying is long and varied, Diaz says seaweed, aloe vera, Dead Sea salts, ginger, lavender, cinnamon, and mustard are on the top of her list.

“We, as a society, rely a lot on ‘quick fix’ products. Unfortunately, they can dehydrate the body, leaving toxic waste,” says Diaz. “By offering spa detox treatments, we are able to help clients to detoxify in a safe, controlled environment.”
