As the birds start chirping, vivid yellows and vibrant greens will make their seasonal surge into our natural landscape. And as an extra treat, beauty forecasters are calling for a similar wave of color across the cosmetic scene. “Whether it be on lips, cheeks or eyes, a pop of color is a necessity for spring,” says Planet Beauty’s Erin Dominguez. “Makeup lines left and right are coming up with a slew of delightful new brights that scream for a colorful spring.”

Though there are a variety of ways the trend might play out, the common thread will be vivid color. “Corals, peaches and vivid reds were seen on eyelids on the runways for spring ‘13,” says Carina Lindgren, owner and makeup artist at Flawless Faces Makeup & Skincare Lounge in Costa Mesa.

Blue and green eyeliners, too, says Lindgren. And don’t be intimidated; you don’t have to be a runway model to use vibrant color. Lindgren recommends lining the top of your lash line with a vivid blue using a thin-angled brush (like M•A•C’s #263). Place a small amount of color on the brush and sweep it along the lash line using your own lashes as a guide. Wing it out at the end for some drama.

Dominguez recommends choosing one facial feature to play up at a time. “If you want a high-octane eye, swipe on a stripe of a splashy liner and play the pout down with a nude, natural lip,” she says. Or if you want to amp up the lips, try red or coral and keep the eye makeup light, says Lindgren.

For a more natural yet still vivid look, nature-inspired color is central to Aveda’s Art of Nature limited-edition makeup collection for spring/summer. “Our new makeup collection starts with pure pastels like the first buds of spring, and builds into lush, high-summer color,” says Janell Geason, global artistic director for Aveda Makeup.

According to Geason, the colors of spring are “greens that range from fresh buds and more saturated emerald greens; corals that range from baby corals to intense, vibrant corals; and ocean blues.”

Lijha Stewart, Make Up For Ever pro and media educator, says it’s all about electric pastels in yellow, lilac and variations of green. “Imagine the most vivid shades with white added to them,” she says. “Light, bright and fresh shades.” She suggests wearing a vibrant yellow shade on the lid with a soft warm brown through the crease while lining the top lash line with black liner (try Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes #0L matte black).

“Eyeliner is another great way to introduce color to your look,” says Stewart. Try a neutral upper lid (like beige), then rim your lower lash line with blue liner (try Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes #12L teal blue). Smudge that out under the lash line with a matte blue shadow.

“Color this season is effortlessly cool, with a focus on color blocking and a fresh red lip using modern matte textures and hyper-bright pigments,” says M•A•C Cosmetics Senior Artist Cynthia Rivas. “We will be seeing ‘pop-art’ lip or eye looks against very minimalistic skin.”
Rivas anticipates plenty of fuchsia, turquoise, gold, coral, and even silver. “All vivid colors will be big this spring, with a focus on placement and organic shape versus structure,” she says.

And just in case you thought a colorful spring would be limited to makeup, expert colorist Jennifer Fontana, co-owner of Cristophe Salon Newport Beach, says to expect peek-a-boo pieces of accent colors and ombre looks with fun accent colors. “Hair color is like makeup or an outfit you wear,” Fontana says. “Some will love the brighter vibrant colors, while others will love delicate soft colors.”
