Yes it's spring. Perhaps a new hairdo is in order. If you enjoyed our "Swept Away" step-by-step on creating spring-ish do's like loose braids and ponytails, here's a little more along those lines from stylists Nicole Simon, of Magnolia Salon in Costa Mesa, and Laura Linsenmayer, owner of ROOTS The Beauty Underground in Laguna Beach.
Beachy, Non-Uniform Waves
To achieve beachy, loose, non-uniform waves in curly hair, use two different sized curling irons, says Simon. Start a few inches from the root and curl down alternating iron sizes. For straight hair, you'll want a more blown-out look as opposed to a flat-iron look. Use a flat paddle brush to get those ends straighter. If you have any natural texture in your hair, towel dry well and apply a lotion-based light hold product throughout. Finger curl all of your hair, set with a light bit of hairspray and let air dry. If it is too crunchy after drying, scrunch out the crunch with your hand. Make sure you use a spray that does not leave hair flakey.
Natural Mixed Texture
Linsenmayer usually recommends conditioning first with Number 4 High Performance Hair Care Hydrating Condition, rinsing and then shampooing with Number 4 Hydrating Shampoo afterward. This creates a unique, cool texture. Comb through hair with a wide-tooth comb.
Apply Number 4 Styling Foam sparingly at the crown. Then take one-inch sections at the mid-shaft down. Apply a combination of Number 4 Blow Dry Lotion and Number 4 Fluoro5 Elixer (which is like a shine serum) to fingertips and hand-twist the sections lightly with the product.
Twist sections away from the face for a more casual, tousled look or toward the face for an old Hollywood look. Let hair air dry.
If you have zero movement or texture in your hair, don’t force it. Take those same random sections and slide a flat iron through it. This will tame and smooth without looking over done.
For an updo, Linsenmayer prefers to start with clean washed hair, rather than dirty hair. She recommends Number 4 Volumizing Shampoo and Condition, which is a very clean, high-quality product since it's 100% vegan, gluten-free, sulfate/sodium chloride-free, and paraben-free.
To create volume at the roots apply Number 4 Styling Foam and a little Number 4 Non Aerosol Hair Spray to damp hair. Blow dry hair crazy and wild, concentrating the heat at the roots. Don’t use any product on the ends.
For long hair, make two to three ponytails. Their position depends on how high you want your updo. Twist and tease the ponies with your fingers. Spin the ponies loosely together and bobby pin into the ponytail holder. This look is about balance. The extra ponytail(s) help to create a fuller, wider, expanded-looking bun.
