Standup for the Cure held its second annual stand-up paddleboard event at Newport Dunes in Newport Beach on Saturday, May 4. Over one thousand paddlers registered for the event and several thousand more spectators attended the festival, which is allied with the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer awareness, diagnosis, treatment, and research. Breast Cancer survivors wore a fresh identifying aloha lei.
The goal of the event is to raise money for the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which uses these donations for breast cancer research, breast health services like mammograms and other related services such as assisting women who are undergoing treatment obtain wigs. On average, every $125 raised provides one mammogram.
The mild but windy day saw a thousand pink-attired paddle boarders work their way across the Dunes area, under the pier and out to back bay. Many were in costumes and a large number of paddlers were accompanied by their dogs. Everything that has any relation to standup paddling (boards, active wear, sunscreens, sandals, pop-up tents) was available for viewing and purchase.
