Making Room on the Santa Ana Freeway

How would you go about widening the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) between the Costa Mesa Freeway (55) and the El Toro Y? Add a conventional lane in either direction? Add a carpool lane in either direction? Add a conventional lane and a carpool lane?

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) believes that something has to be done because today’s traffic of 355,000 vehicles per day will increase to an estimated 440,000 vehicles per day by 2030.

A study contract has been awarded by OCTA to MTS Engineers to come up with suggestions.
