One looks like a spaceship. Another, like a giant bird's nest. And still another is a “mirrorcube.” From your perch in the forest overlooking the Lule River Valley in the northern end of Sweden, you're almost in the Lapland region, yet very much in the 21st century. The Treehotel was inspired by Swedish film The Tree Lover about city guys who get back to nature by building tree houses together.

The five eco-friendly “treerooms” are quiet and secluded but comfortable and as modern as an Ikea showroom. But showers are located separately. Brittas Restaurant serves up the food (which can be brought to your room) and the bar and Tree Sauna keep things relaxed, even after a day fishing or kayaking on the river, horseback riding, mountain biking or just exploring in the countryside. Rooms in summer are $671 per night per couple. A romantic weekend package includes a two-night stay, breakfast and two three-course dinners for $778 per person.

Oregon
At the edge of the Siskiyou National Forest is a 36-acre private ranch that is the Out ‘n’ About Treesort, kind of a kid’s dream come true of a tree house village courtesy of owner and builder Michael Garnier. The solitude is there if you want. Or a Pacific Northwest adventure full of horseback rides, swimming, river rafting, ziplining and even a giant Tarzan Swing. Roasting marshmallows around a large fire pit are some of the common night activities. Amenities are more on the rustic side and include both daytrip and overnight tree houses and one firmly grounded cabin. Full bath, half bath or outhouse-type bathrooms are available depending on which of the 14 tree houses you book. Some are more romantic, others family friendly. Bookings can only be made by phone and run from $120-$300, including a full breakfast.

There are elephants, cheetahs, primates and birds to see, waves to be surfed, sails to be raised nearby. Or, you can just relax on your deck to the sound of the wind through the trees.

The Garden Route has some of the most consistently wonderful weather in the world. Warm, green and gorgeous, the area that surrounds the private grounds are ecologically and culturally diverse, so if you’re expecting to relax in your luxury tree house – and it is a five-star retreat – you might be surprised how strong the urge is to go out and explore the local waters or the nearby animal sanctuaries, or just go for a walk. All ten suites and six villas come with standard hotel amenities plus Wi-Fi, fireplaces, and under floor heating and air-conditioning. Suites begin at $202 per person per night and include breakfast on the dining deck overlooking the forest.
