If you can’t ring in the new year in a real tropical paradise, greet it at Don the Beachcomber with the Huntington Beach restaurant’s Waitiki Festival.

With its tiki culture and island drinks, the popular 1930s, Hollywood restaurant was simulating the staycation before the word staycation existed. Recently re-opened in Huntington Beach, Don the Beachcomber welcomes 2011 with three nights of live music featuring exotica legend Robert Drasnin and ’90s tiki revival group, Combustible Edison.

The series begins December 29 with the classic Waitiki Quartet bringing you the jazz side of exotica. On December 30, Robert Drasnin and Sherry Shaoling perform with the Waitiki 7, leading up to New Year’s Eve performances by Combustible Edison, Brother Cleve and The Millionaire.

The event will also feature cocktails invented by mixologist and restaurant founder Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt, aka Donn Beach, famous for pioneering the concept of tropical rum drinks, most notoriously the Zombie (named for what the lethal drink will turn you into).

Tickets must be purchased in advance.
