“Contains mature themes, sexual situations and strong language.” Broadway musicals seldom have disclaimers akin
to a PG-13 movie, but Broadway musicals seldom look and sound like the bold and brash Spring Awakening, which comes to the Orange County Performing Arts Center November 17-29, 2009. Winner of eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical) in 2007, Spring Awakening was and still is the most talked-about new musical on Broadway.
Yes, the critics raved and audiences go wild for this show. Even more telling, though, are the countless heartfelt comments sent to Spring Awakening producers from parents who have experienced the show with their teenagers.
“Spring Awakening certainly entertains, with its unique set, energetic cast and rockin’ score, but it also provokes thought and conversation,” wrote one mother. “Although set in the 1880s, Spring Awakening portrays many of the difficult issues and decisions that young people today still experience. Sexuality in a number of its variations is graphically displayed in a relevant and realistic manner. Perhaps even more importantly, the pressures placed upon teens to both grow and develop as individuals occur simultaneously with demands to conform. It’s an opportunity to share and explore your values with your teen.”
When’s the last time a Broadway musical did that?
