He’s got spirit

Laguna Woods resident Gene Miller just won a 2008 Spirit of Volunteerism Award from the Volunteer Center of Orange County and the Orange County Register.

Miller was singled out for his work with the Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance, a non profit working to educate the community about Ovarian Cancer.

Miller’s wife Elizabeth died in 2006 after an eight year battle with the disease.  He launched the Elizabeth Miller Memorial Golf Tournament to honor his late spouse and raise money to increase awareness of the disease.

Proceeds from the 2006-7 tournaments were donated to Gilda’s Club and the Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance.

He and his daughters also take part in health fairs, cancer walks and other fundraising activities in Southern California.

He also has a license plate, “Ovarian,” to stimulate conversation.  He said he will do all he can to fight Ovarian cancer “until there is a cure.”  For information about, OCOCA visit www.ovarianoc.orgor call 714-974-0697.
